Our Mission

Our mission is to promote and advance the adoption and development of electronic paper (epaper) technologies worldwide.

We aim to bring together stakeholders from various industries to:

  • establish industrial standards,
  • raise public awareness about the benefits of e-paper, and
  • advocate for the transformative power of e-paper technologies.

Through collaboration and advocacy, our goal is to create a sustainable and accessible future where digital reading empowers consumers, businesses and service providers to create a more seamless, efficient and eco-friendly experience for everyone.

Our History

Electronic Paper, also known as epaper, is a revolutionary technology that has revolutionized how we read and interact with digital content. It originated in the 1970s when researchers and visionaries began exploring electronic display systems. The journey of epaper is a fascinating story of innovation and collaboration, leading to the development of a versatile and sustainable display technology that shapes our world today.

The history of e-paper begins with the groundbreaking work of Nick Sheridon at Xerox’s Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) in the 1970s. Sheridon’s research on “Gyricon,” a reusable electronic paper concept, laid the foundation for future advancements in electronic display technology.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, E Ink Corporation, a spin-off from MIT’s Media Lab, played a pivotal role in advancing epaper technology. E Ink ntroduced the “electrophoretic” display, which used microcapsules filled with charged black and white particles. Applying an electric field caused these particles to move, displaying text and images.

The success of E Ink’s electrophoretic display in e-readers like Amazon’s Kindle popularized digital reading and fueled the demand for e-paper technology. Since then, significant advancements have been made in e-paper technology, improving contrast, refresh rates, and colour capabilities. Today, e-paper displays can be found in smartwatches, electronic shelf labels, public transportation signage, and more.

The history of e-paper showcases human ingenuity and innovation. From its conceptualization to commercial success, e-paper has transformed our digital experiences and will continue to improve people’s lives.
